August 2013 Newsletter

Welcome to the website for the new Academic Professional Development Center at Truman State University!  I am looking forward to working with all of you in the upcoming year.  I will be holding office hours from 12:00-1:00 every day in the new APD office at 153 Baldwin Hall.  Feel free to stop by any time to say hello, ask a question, or check out a book from our small (but growing) lending library.

The year has been off to a busy start, as we welcomed approximately 30 new faculty members at New Faculty Orientation on Monday, August 12:

I want to take this opportunity to let you know about a few upcoming professional development events:
  • This year, we would like to have our first-ever set of Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs), which are groups of 6-10 faculty who read through a book or series of articles together over the course of a year and meet roughly once a month to discuss the readings.  We will begin with the book What the Best College Teachers Do by Ken Bain.  Please let me know by Friday, September 6 if you are interested in participating.  Meeting times will be determined after the groups are set, as there may be multiple groups if there is sufficient interest. Books and meeting snacks will be provided by the APDC.  If you would like to start up an FLC on a different topic, let me know!  There is already a group of new faculty who plan to start their own FLC with a focus on writing for academic publications.

  • On Thursday, September 5 at 3:00pm in the SUB Georgian Room A we will have our first Faculty Development Coffee on the topic of Preparing Your Sabbatical Application.  No RSVP is necessary.  If you plan to apply for a sabbatical for next year and have a draft of your application prepared, feel free to bring it along for feedback from others.

  • On Tuesday, September 10 from 1:00-3:00 p.m., there will be an Open House at the APDC office in 153 Baldwin Hall.  Stop by, say hello, have a cookie, and check out our new space!  There is a nice conference table available here for small meetings.

  • On Wednesday, September 18 from 11:30-12:30 p.m. in the SUB Georgian Room B, we will have our first APDC Lunch.  We will be discussing the article "My Journey with Inquiry-Based Learning" by Joseph J. Gonzalez (2013: Journal of Excellence in College Teaching, 24(2) 33-50) , which can be downloaded here if you are on a Truman computer or log in through VPN.  Sandwiches from Blimpie will be served, or you may bring your own lunch.  Please RSVP here by Friday, September 15 at noon if you plan to attend and want to be included in the lunch order.  If you will be bringing your own food, no RSVP is necessary.
Also, please be aware of the following deadlines for professional development opportunities:
  • Sabbatical applications are due by noon on Monday, September 16. A link to the sabbatical application guidelines can be found here .
  • The deadline for Truman Academic Development Support (TADS) grants is noon on Monday, September 30.  Application information can be found here.
